“The Youth’s Friend” was published yearly by the American Sunday School Union (founded in Philadelphia in 1824). It sought to promote literacy, spirituality and life lessons to its audience of American children. Harsh, beautiful and salubrious, this youth’s companion taught temperance, acceptance and reading skills, among other 19th-century necessities.
